Safer Surrey Heath Partnership
Keeping burglars at bay
In April 2007, the Partnership approved a funding bid from West Surrey Police (formerly North West Surrey Police) to pay for six mobile anti-burglary signs. The Partnership is supporting the initiative as part of its long-term target to reduce incidences and reports of domestic burglary.
In fact, the latest figures from Surrey Police show that in Surrey Heath, recorded incidents of domestic burglary fell by 22.1 per cent between April 2007 and March 2008 (down by 57 cases to 301 cases). Burglary from non-residential property fell by 13.9 per cent to 260 reported cases during the same period.
West Surrey Police is using the high visibility anti-burglary signs to remind residents to lock up properly and keep their eyes peeled for suspicious activity in their neighbourhood. The free-standing mobile signs are stationed temporarily for up to a week in residential areas where properties have been targeted. Increased police patrols and leaflet drops are also instigated to boost the impact of the signs.
PC Robin Wood, Crime Reduction Advisor for West Surrey Police, said: "Although Surrey Heath is one of the safest boroughs in the county, residents do still suffer from a degree of dwelling burglaries. Following a spate of burglaries in a particular area, the signs are deployed to warn residents to beware and be extra vigilant. They also serve as a warning to potential offenders to keep away from the area.
"In two out every 10 burglaries, offenders gain entry through an open door or window. So I would urge homeowners to ensure that they have good quality locks on all their doors and windows - and to make sure they use them," added PC Wood.
